Protecting Wilderness and National Parks

Short practice note to those considering large-scale pumped-hydro projects in national parks and wilderness areas

“Locating further pumped-hydro projects in national parks should be taken to mean war with environment groups,” Keith Muir director of the Colong Foundation for Wilderness said.

“Locating pumped-hydro projects in wilderness areas should be taken to mean total war with environment groups,” Mr Muir said.

“If the NSW Government’s Handbook for Large-Scale Pumped-Hydro projects can’t list the NSW Wilderness Act as relevant legislation or make any greater cautionary remark regarding our wonderful national parks than “places some restrictions on development”, then pumped-hyrdo developers should be aware that this “handbook” might prove more politically dangerous than a ropeless abseil,” said Mr Muir.

“If national parks and wilderness are excluded from pumped-hydro project proposals, like the seminal ANU work on pumped-hydro identified, then we can work together,” he said.  “And thank goodness for that, as climate change is upon us”, he added.
