No welfare for the Aviation Industry, as students pay for budget repair

“As expected, the proposed Western Sydney Airport is uneconomic and its construction would require a major government subsidy,” Keith Muir director of the Colong Foundation for Wilderness revealed.

“So there we have it, a Federal Coalition Government offering welfare to the aviation industry.  What an inverted sense of priorities that this Federal Government has when university students will be required to pay for budget repair while aviation corporations are to receive billions in terms of new airport construction,” Mr Muir said.

“Of course Sydney Airport Corporation will over the next three months re-engage[1] with the Turnbull Government on its offer to undertake construction or perhaps a billion on the earthworks to create a deal more favourable to the Corporation”, said Mr Muir.

“Even without basic environmental measures, such as a rail link, an aviation fuel pipeline and, importantly, flightpaths designed to protect wilderness and community from aircraft noise, the airport is now proven to be an economic dud”, said Mr Muir.

“The proposed aviation industry welfare ignores the environmental impacts of Western Sydney Airport and that also makes the welfare environmentally unsound.  The priceless natural quiet of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area will be lost and the air pollution due to massive motor vehicle traffic increases will harm peoples’ health,” he said.

“The Colong Foundation even offered a blue print by the US National Parks Service to apply to Western Sydney Airport that could protect natural quite of the Blue Mountains wilderness.  This blue print was completely ignored.  Obviously it ‘might’ have impacted upon the economic viability of the Airport that is to operate exactly the way the aviation industry wants to operate it, regardless of impacts, so as to make in “viable”.  Well that environmental give away didn’t work, so now we have a tax-dollar give away too”, Mr Muir said.

“Please Prime Minister Turnbull, toss this airport proposal in the round file and give Western Sydney some peace.  The proposed airport was always a dud and 40 years of indecision over the Badgerys Creek site proves it to be a dud.
