Protecting Wilderness and National Parks

Protect the Illawarra Escarpment from 82 km of damaging bike track construction

A draft Mountain Bike Strategy for the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area would allow 82 kilometres of downhill mountain bike tracks to be constructed in addition to approval of some existing illegal tracks.

Despite a Wollongong City Council resolution from 2013 to ensure no additional damage to native flora, fauna and eco systems in the Illawarra escarpment and foothills from any bike park the draft stategy wants to develop a maze of tracks that essentially creates a bike park out of this famous reserve.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR COMMENTS is Friday 21 December, 2018.

Please make a submission objecting to the Draft Stratey and Bike Concept Plan using the guide below. The draft Strategy must be rejected, to protect the heritage natural values of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area.

You can adapt the guide letter in your own words. By making a submission you will help ensure conservation management in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area.

Extra points you could make in the 'Your Comments' field below the main message:

I object to a behind closed doors arrangement that altered the Illawarra Escarpment reserve plan of management from preventing downhill bike tracks to one that can approve construction of up to 82 kilometres of mountain bike tracks. The mechanised construction techiques will cause significant soil disturbance and vegetation clearing in this reserve.

Bike track construction involves a small excavator used to make a bench of two metres wide for most of the track.  Spoil (vegetation and topsoil) to be pushed to the downhill side of the trail.  These are not appropriate actions over 82 kilometres of MTB track and incompatible with nature conservation.

If you want the Colong Foundation to keep you up to date on wilderness and national park issues, please select that option at the bottom of your submission.
