Protecting Wilderness and National Parks

Defend Tasmania's wilderness

Write a submission opposing the 2015 draft Management Plan for the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area

The 2015 Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area draft Management Plan proposes to remove explicit wilderness protection and open the World Heritage Area to logging, commercial lodges, aircraft landing sites and noise. The word wilderness is even proposed to be removed from the name of the World Heritage Area.

Below is a submission guide that you can edit, and remember, it’s better to put your concerns in your own words. Once you are happy with your submission, click 'Submit' to send it to the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service. You will then receive a copy of your submission. You can find the draft Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area Management Plan on this Tasmanian Parks and Wildllife webpage

Please tell your friends to take action on this very important matter and share this page. Wilderness is in peril: if this plan is approved, then the fate of Tasmania’s national parks and World Heritage Areas will have been rewritten for the benefit of commercial interests. Please, don't sit by and let that happen!

The submission period ends 5pm, 22 March 2015                         For more detailed information see - Colong's submission

Some additional points  you could mention in your submission:

OF ALL THE WORLD HERITAGE AREAS ON EARTH, only Tasmania’s south-west has been honoured with a title of Wilderness, as a tribute to the region's magnificent wildness. Please keep and protect this precious wilderness.

The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) is one of most intact natural areas remaining on Earth, one that inspires us with its scenic beauty. The TWWHA was not given this world honour just for us. It is recognised for the community of life and culture that the area protects. The intrinsic value of this wilderness includes its broad range of irreplaceable habitats for the many native plants and animals found nowhere else, including some that are threatened with extinction. Removing the wilderness zone will put its World Heritage values at risk.

If adopted, this proposed management plan will degrade the conservation management of the area. Tasmania’s wilderness is the envy of the world. It is also the world’s fastest disappearing natural resource because the Tasmanian Government is planning to erase it. Yet wilderness is the foundation of Tasmania’s globally recognised brand and drives the state’s tourism industry. The Tasmanian Wilderness needs to be respected and carefully managed, rather than abolished as this plan of management proposes to do.
