THREATS
FERAL ANIMALS
Grazing by rabbits is a problem in parts of the area. he advent of myxomatosis
about 40 years ago, reduced rabbit numbers somewhat. The irregular dunefields
support relatively few rabbits, while the northern section supports low to
moderate numbers. Rabbit populations in woodland and grassland communities are
frequently high and their grazing pressure, combined with the grazing of
domestic stock in such areas, can lead to substantial degradation of the
vegetation.
Feral goats are widespread and relatively common throughout. They may exert
heavy localised browsing pressure. They are dependent on access to water in
summer and the provision of water for licensed stock grazing has enabled them to
persist and even increase in numbers in areas remote from agricultural land. [3]
