LAND USE HISTORY
1839
The first grazing licence in far East Gippsland was issued to John Stevenson for
the Wangarabell.
Since this time the river floats at Wangarabell, together with other areas of
early European settlement at Genoa and along the Nungatta Creek and Cann River
valleys, have remained the centres of intensive use with cattle being grazed to
the present day. [3]
Little is known of early Aboriginal activity within the block and very few
archaeological sites are recorded.
Some gold mining occurred along the Genoa River and a former goldfield lies near
Mount Merragunegin. [4]

ENDNOTES
1
The entire area is within the Alpine National Park.
2
Land Conservation Council, 1991, "Wilderness Special Investigation Final
Recommendations" identifies two areas of wilderness quality within the area.
Genoa (19,400 ha) was declared wilderness, Mt Kaye (8,100 ha) was excluded from
the wilderness and called an Other Area with Remote and Natural Attributes
because its inclusion would have required the closure of the WB Line - a minor
two-wheel drive road.
