DESCRIPTION

Devonian granites intruded through Cambrian and Proterozoic metasediments form
the basis for this area. The Meredith Range is over 700 metres high and local
relief is around 400 metres. [1]

Tributaries of the Pieman River flow southwards from the area. [2]

Vegetation of the area includes cool temperate rainforest, scrubs of heath and
rainforest species, and sedgelands. [3]

Little information is available about the fauna of the area.

CONSERVATION HISTORY

1979
The Centre for Environmental Studies, University of Tasmania publishes a report
to the Australian Heritage Commission describing thirteen wilderness areas in
Tasmania. Among these is a 25,000 ha Meredith Range wilderness.

THREATS

OFF ROAD VEHICLES
A number of mining tracks traverse this area, as it includes deposits of tin and
wolframite, and off road vehicles use these tracks regularly. [5]
