DESCRIPTION
The area comprises hogback ridges, flood plains and valley floors. The central
core and northern spur of the highland regions are made up of a system of
Proterozoic sandstones, metequartzites and granites creating a rugged landform
system with no parallel in South Australia and of great scenic attraction. [1]
The vegetation of the sandstones and granites is chiefly characterised by an
open woodland of Eucalyptus intertexta, hummock grassland of spinifex (Triodia
irritans), ephemeral herbs and sparse, low shrubs, mostly chenopods. The area
contains between 250 and 300 species of plants. [2]
The Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby (Petrogale xanthopus) is a notable member of the
local fauna. The existence and extent of small marsupial and rodent populations
is not well known, nor has much study been done on the reptiles in the area. A
large number of bird species has been recorded for Arkarola. [3]
