DESCRIPTION

This area displays regular parallel dunes similar of those of the Great Victoria
Desert, and areas of salt lakes. The dunefield mantles an erosional plain, and
low outcrops of granite or volcanics form inselbergs or tors within the
dunefield. The dunes consist largely of red sand derived from the Western
Australian Shield, with a gradual colour change to the south where white sands
derived from the coast eventually predominate. [1]

The vegetation cover is mallee open scrub with a chelopod shrub or grass
understorey. The dunes coarry an association of mallee, mainly Eucalyptus
socialis and Porcupine Grass (Triodia irritans) while the swales support an
association of E. socialis, E. gracilis and Saltbush (Atriplex vesicaria) and
Blue Bush (Maireana sedifolia). Some unusual eucalypts are known to occur here.
[2]

The increasingly rare Mallee fowl (Leipoa ocellata) and Thick-billed Grasswren
(Amytornis textilis). Gould's Mouse (Pseudomys gouldii) has been collected in
the region. [3]
