DESCRIPTION

The Hambidge area is situated in the central Eyre Peninsula. Its major
topographical feature is a sand dune system of roughly parallel ridges running
northwest-southeast. The only outcropping rock is calcarenite limestone formed
from lime-rich sands of marine origin and resulting from the retreat of the sea.
A small part of the area consists of scattered claypans occurring in the lowest
interdune valleys where water collects in the rainy season.
[1]

The area supports mainly mallee-Broombush vegetation. The dominant mallee
species are Eucalyptus incrassata and E. foecunda. In the dunes these are
associated with Broombush (Melaleuca uncinata) and with other scattered species
such as sweet Quandong (Santalum acuminatum), Native Cherry Tree (Exocarpos
sparteus) and Native Pine (Callitris canescens). [2]

The area supports a population of Western Grey Kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus
melanops) and small nocturnal marsupials. A varied assortment of birds live in
the area and reptiles - particularly lizards - are common. [3]
