DESCRIPTION

Cape Gantheaume is located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island. The area
consists of undulating plains of calcrete with overlying coastal sand dunes. The
coastline is dominated by rock cliffs but includes stretches where the land
falls more gently to the sea; sandy beaches occur in the more sheltered bays.
Generally, the soils which have developed are podsols deficient in cobalt and
copper, which have excluded agricultural development. Annual rainfall is
500-700mm. [1]

The dominant native vegetation is open scrub. This cnsists of Eucalyptus
diversifolia open scrub on limestone in the east and E. diversifolia - E. rugosa
open scrub on consolidated sand dunes in the west, with a narrow strip of heath
along the coast. [2]

The birds of the area comprise maritime species, swamp and scrub species, and a
limited number of parrots. Little is known of the reptiles in the area. The
Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and the Tammar Wallaby (Macropus
eugenii) occur along the central strip. Inland are the dark-furred Kangaroo
Island Grey Kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus fuliginosus) which inhabit the
mallee and other scrubs. [3]
