DESCRIPTION

This area is characterised by extensive river floodplains. Tertiary and
Quaternary sediments and alluvium underlie the area. [1]

The Staaten River and a myriad of tributaries flow westward through the area to
the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Melaleuca woodlands dominate the area's floodplain vegetation, with gallery
rainforest occurring along the rivers. Eucalypt woodlands with a grassy
understorey occur on the ridges and higher ground. [2]

Little information is available about the fauna of the area.
