DESCRIPTION
This area is an ecologically diverse area featuring coastal sand dunes,
swamplands, forests and mangroves. The peninsula range rises to 600 metres above
sea level and at its northern end is underlain by Cretaceous acid volcanics. In
the south, Devonian sediemnts dominate. There are also some areas of Cretaceous
granites. [1]
Extensive mangrove stands are to be found fronting Shoalwater Bay. Rainforests,
heaths, shrublands, woodlands and forests occur in the area. [2]
The area has a rich fauna, reflecting the diversity of habitats. It has been
suggested that this area may contain up to one third of Australia's bird, mammal
and reptile species. [3]
