DESCRIPTION

This area is part of an extensive sand mass which stretches northwards from
Noosa Heads. The area is characterised by rocky headlands, long beaches, perched
freshwater lakes and coloured sand cliff faces. Underlying the sand dunes are
Cretaceous sediments, whilst the headlands of the east coast are composed of
tertiary rhyolites. [1]

Vegetation within the area forms an extraordinarily rich mosaic. Mangroves,
herblands, heath and rainforests are all represented. [2]

The fauna of the area is not so diverse as the flora, possibly as a consequence
of the area's isolation from the mainland. [3]

THREATS

OFF ROAD VEHICLES
The widespread use of off-road vehicles as a means of transport on Fraser Island
presents a serious conflict with wilderness management for this area, its
eastern beaches being subject to heavy traffic. [4]
