This area comprises the western section of the Laura basin and consists of a
plain of Jurassic sandstone overlain by Tertiary alluvial deposits and bounded
by sandstone mountains. [1]

Areas with pronounced saline influence support mangrove/samphire communities
forming vast, grassy plains. Melaleuca woodlands ocupy waterlogged lowlands in
areas of lower salinity. On well draines soils, eucalypt forest are dominant.
The reaches of larger streams are lined with fringe communities of Melaleuca
leucadendron and isolated patches of rainforest. [2]

Little information is available on the area's fauna.
