DESCRIPTION

This area consists of a wide plateau reaching 900 metres and drained by a number
of creeks. Escarpments of Permian and Devonian sandstones up to 100 metres high
border the plateau in the east. The sediments are underlain by older volcanic
rocks. [1]

Vegetation is predominantly eucalypt open forest dominated by New England
Blackbutt (Eucalyptus andrewsi) and Sydney Blue Gum (Eucalyptus saligna). The
understorey includes many heath species and a variety of ferns. Rainforest
occurs as an understorey within the stands of Sydney Blue Gum. Vine thickets are
found on the western side of the plateau. Open forest or woodland of
Lemon-scented Gum (E. citriodora), Narrow-leaved Ironbark (E. crebra), Bloodwood
(E. intermedia) and Forest Red Gum (E. tereticornis) is found on the eastern
slopes. [2]

Fauna is abundant within the area, with many species typical of rainforest or
rainforest fringe areas and with a number of forest-dwelling species close to
their northern limits. [3]

THREATS

LOGGING
As much of the land within this area is state forest under the control of the
Forestry Department, logging poses a significant threat. Forestry operations on
the eastern side of the area have seriously reduced wilderness values. [4]

OFF ROAD VEHICLES
A forestry track, with side trails along ridges, traverses the tops and allows
access by off road vehicles. [5]
