DESCRIPTION

The Jardine area comprises lands of low relief and with broad plateaux and
narrow valleys. Mesozoic horizontally-bedded sandstones are overlain by
Quaternary sand dunes. A low escarpment of up to 60 metres is found along the
eastern side of the Great Dividing Range. East of the Range are white, sileceous
sand dunes. [1]

West of the range flows the Jardine River, Queensland's largest stream in terms
of volume of water discharged. [2]

Vegetation within the area is complex, with tropical rainforest on deeper sands,
substantial forests of melaleucas, often in asssociation with a wide range of
other species, sedgelands dominated by Gahnia sieberana, heathland, eucalypt
forest and shrubland. Freshwater mangroves and lianas are common features along
streams, as are patches of gallery rainforest. [3]

Fauna within the area is typical of Cape York Peninsula with a wide species
diversity due to the variety of suitable habitats. [4]
