DESCRIPTION

Rising to 1,300 metres, the Eungella range forms the watershed between the
Broken and Pioneer Rivers. Streams plummet to the lowlands through gorges up to
300 metres deep. Most of the area is underlain by the Connors volcanics of
Carboniferous age. Intrusions of granite, granodiorite and adamellite of Permian
age are common. [1]

The area includes the largest occurence of rainforest in Central Queensland.
This covers about half the wilderness area. A substantial part of the remainder
of the area is open eucalypt woodland or eucalypt forest. [2]

Rainforest mammals are common within the area as are species which require
ecotonal sites, where rainforest borders on eucalypt forest. There are many
endemic species within the area. Platypus are a feature of the streamlife of the
area. [3]
