DESCRIPTION
This wilderness area consists of a large island south-east of Rockhampton
underlain by Devonian-Carboniferous sediments. Sand dunes occur on the
north-eastern corner of the islnad. The area includes both freshwater and saline
wetlands. [1]
Vegetation on the island is quite complex, consisting of tracts of open eucalypt
woodlands, banksia scrublands or wallum (Banksia aemula), heath, vine thicket
and mangroves. [2]
Fauna on the island is typical of coastal Queensland. A well-known turtle
rookery is sited on the island. [3]

Developments on the island include a small settlement at the southern end of the
island, jpastroal improvements and a lighthouse at the northern end of the
island. Some squatters' huts exist on the eastern side of the island. [4]
