DESCRIPTION

This is an area of spectacular coastal scenery north of
Mossman. Striking rainforest-clad, granite mountains rise
over 1,000 metres above the adjacent coastline. Fringing
coral reefs and white sand beaches add to the scenic
grandeur and diversity of the
area. [1]

Roaring Meg Creek flows over a series of significant waterfalls
before reaching the sea. [2]

Rainforests occupy large parts of the area and contain a great
number of endemic plants. Some of the world's most primitive
flowering plants survive in these rainforests. [3]

The area's fauna is diverse and, in some respects, unique. Over
20 birds occur at their northern limit here and many birds
restricted to north Queensland rainforests are quite
common in the area. The Mosaic-tailed Rat and the
Microhylid Frog are endemic to the
area. [4]

THREATS

DEVELOPMENT

Subdivisions of freehold land in the area pose a threat
due to added pressures for further road construction and
for provision of utilities such as powerlines.[5]

MINING

Some mining titles have been granted over parts of the area. [6]

ROADING

A four-wheel drive road, constructed by the Mossman Shire Council,
is a major intrusion into the area. The road's erosion has resulted
in siltation affecting the fringing coral reefs. [7]
