DESCRIPTION

Large expanses of allubial plains and tidal saline mud flats characterise the
coast and river esturaries of this area. The eastern part of the area reaches to
400 metres elevation but gradients are gradual. Tertialry sands cover most of
the area. [1]

The Coleman, Mitchel and Alice Rivers drain the area.

Mangroves are the dominant vegetation of the salt flats. Travelling away from
the coastline, grasslands are soon encountered, followed by savannah woodland
then a woodland of eucalypts and melaleucas. [2]

Fauna within the area is not as diverse as other parts of the Cape York region,
with species adapted to drier sites being favoured. [3]
