DESCRIPTION

Extensive areas of floodplains at the mouth of the Roper and Limmen Bight
Rivers, and of mangroves east of the Limmen River mouth, characterise this area.
Whilst hills towards the south of the area rise to 200 metres above sea level,
tol-lying country dominates. Proterozoic sediments underlie the area. [1]

Vegetation in the area includes Melaleuca scrubs on floodplains and mangroves on
tidal flats. Woodlands dominated by a wide variety of eucalypts and native pine
are found away from seasonally inundated areas. Grassland-woodland associations
are widespread. [2]

Little information on the area's fauna is available, but it is simlar to other
flood plain areas of northern Australia in supporting waterbirds; however, this
area is very much drier and consequently provides less of this habitat. [3]
