DESCRIPTION

The Groote Eylandt area is similar to the Melville Island area in that it
coverts about half of an island with relief less than 200 metres. Groote Eylandt
is composed mainly of Proterozoic sediemnts of the same group as form the Arnhem
Plateau. [1]

Vegetation in this areas could be expected to be similar to Arnhem Land, with
eucalypt woodland of Darwin Stringybark and Woollybutt dominating. Areas of
melaleuca swamp occur in the southeast. [2]

Fauna might be expected to be similar to mainland assemblages, but perhaps with
less species diversity. [3]
