DESCRIPTION

Extensive areas of floodplain and tidal flats make up much of this area. There
are lines of low coastal cliffs of Permian-Triassic sandstones. Inland, low
hills occur, reaching to 200 metres in elevation along the Dilke Range.
Proterozoic granites underlie the eastern parts of the area, along the Daly
River. [1]

Vegetation varies from the mangrove and melaleuca-screw pine scrubs of the
lowlands, to tropical tussock grassland, eucalypt woodland and semi-evergreen
vine forests where drier conditions are found. [2]

Fauna within the area is similar to that found on the Cobourg Peninsula
(Alligator). [3]

ENDANGERED SPECIES

LAND USE HISTORY

A permanent Aboriginal settlement exists north-west of Flood Hill. [4]

CONSERVATION HISTORY

THREATS

GRAZING
Grazing extends into the south of the wilderness area in the vicinity of Moyle
River. [5]

MINING
Mining of copper deposits associated with granitic rocks has occurred along the
eastern boundary of the area. Some pollution of the Daly River has resulted from
these operations. [6]
