DESCRIPTION

A series of ranges of late Devonian age border this area to the south east. The
highest hills rise to over 400 metres above sea evel. Away from the ranges lie a
series of low sand ridges of Tertiary age. [1]

Vegetation predominantly consists of mallee dominated by Eucalyptus socialis and
woodland of White Pine (Callitris columellaris) and Red Box (Eucalyptus
intertexta). Smaller areas of Belah (Casuarina cristata) - Rosewood
(Heterodendron oleifolium) woodland occur particularly in the south. [2]

Mallee communities suport a number of unusual birds, the best known of which is
the Mallee Fowl. The Yathong area also supports large populations of kangaroos
and emus.

LAND USE HISTORY


Aboriginal use of the area was probably restricted to the ranges where hand
stencils have been found in overhangs. [5]


The area had been used for grazing since European settlement until the Yathong
Nature Reserve was dedicated over part of teh area. [6]

CONSERVATION HISTORY

No conservation history is recorded for this area.

THREATS

FERAL ANIMALS
Feral goats and rabbits have caused damage to vegetation communities in the
area. [7]

FIRE MANAGEMENT
A number of tracks exist in the area including some recently constructed in an
attempt to control wildfires. In addition some earth tanks and bores exist.
