DESCRIPTION

A large salt lake situated about 250 km north of Broken Hill is the dominant
landscape feature in this area. A njmber of smaller depressions and dry
watercourses extend into the low parallel dune country to the east of the Salt
Lake, as the large lake is known. The dunes consist of depositional material of
Tertiary age. [1]

Herbland of Grey Samphire (Arthrocnemum halocnemoides) dominates the lake
margins. Away from the saline areas herbland of Lignum (Muehlenbeckia
cunninghamii) - Canegrass (Eragrostis australasica) is common. Mulga (Acacia
aneura) woodland is found on the dune country. Stands of Black Box (Eucalyptus
largiflorens) may be found along some of the watercourses. [2]

Fauna of the area has not been studied in detail but is likely to be typical of
western New South Wales with a significant complement of waterbirds during good
seasons. [3]
